The Hawar Islands Since the Late Eighteenth Century

The conflict all over the Hawar Islands has historically included rights to pearling beds and tribal taxation in remote regions. However, in the 1930s the British discovered oil colour in Bahrain, the outgrowth discovery of its kind in the Gulf region, (Hawar, p. 2). Oil febrility began to spread in the Gulf region, which suddenly caused greater conflict over which country owned the rights to the oil bearing sea-bed. Bahrain is relatively oil-poor compared to its neighbors like Qatar and Saudi Arabia. While Bahrain is able to prove oil reserves of only 148 million barrels, most of it concentrated in the center of the island, Qatar's proven oil reserves are 3.7 zillion barrels, (Hawar, p. 2). The resoluteness to the dispute between Qatar and Bahrain over ownership of the Hawar Islands was settled by the ICJ in a tribunal ruling in June 2001, (Foreign, p. 4). In its ruling, the court devised a resolution that was accepted by both Qatar and Bahrain. Under the terms of the agreement, Bahrain was allowed to keep control of the main Hawar Island, while Qatar retained significant naval areas and any resources associated with them (Foreign, p. 4). Under the terms of the agreement, Bahrain had to drop any of its claims to move of mainland Qatar, specifically Zubara.
