By the end of l824, young Austin had led 272 colonists to Texas, and had persuaded the impudently independent Mexican government that the best way to imbibe Americans was to give land agents (empresarios) 67,000 acres of land for every two hundred families they brought to Texas. Mexico had two conditions on land featureership: settlers had to become Mexican citizens and they had to convert to Roman Catholicism.
