The first work shift channel that shaped the ontogenesis of American issue security was the demise of the frozen war. This leftfield America with no major enemy, the era that gave us McCarthyism, the Cuban missile crisis, the miracle on ice, and Rocky vs. Drago was gone. As stated in Snow’s book there wasn’t a concern for a general systematic war that imperil national or international survival. The second fault line was America’s view after the Sept. 11 attacks, a shift from symmetrical warfare to asymmetrical. This new era brings us terror alert levels, the patriot act, and stripteases at the airport. These faults have influenced our national security priorities in a number of ways. The post snappy war era changed America’s priority from geopolitics to sparing globalization, which leads to democratic peace. Another shift was the justification of war, where in the acold war era it consisted of preventing the spread of communism, now it focused on peace keeping missions and protecting civilians, which characterized our involvementin the Balkans. In the post 911 fault we faced a new kind of war, “ the war on terror”.




This war is unlike any other forward war we have placed priority on. We are not engaging other countries, but nonstate individuals who don’t interact with countries, but rather ideologies. Instead of the black and white involvement outline defined by the cold war, we have important grey areas like Pakistan for example, are they allies or harborers of terrorist.
During the cold war lines ere clearly drawn, east vs. west. It was a race of exceedingly powers, who was going to take over the world. The biggest threat the United States had was that of a military opposition from communist countries.
