The city of Genericville has been faced with the difficult decisions in regard to the West Nile Virus (WNV) and the proposed treatment of Malathion. Malathion is a artificial insecticide in the chemical family known as organophosphates. In history Malathion has been used in the public to control mosquitoes and pay moody flies, working successfully reducing the insects and any viruses they may carry. The councils main concern is the future health risk that crowd out affect the people and community of Genericville. After carefully enquirying the strengths and weaknesses of Malathion, the council has make a sound decision to begin the process in getting rid of mosquitoes with this pesticide. This decision was based solely off the risk assessment of hazard identification, dose-response, exposure, and risk characterization.


In the research for Malathion council members wanted to first instruct the hazard identification of this carrefour and how it could affect the towns people.



Malathion was first registered for use in the United States in 1956 by the United States Department of husbandry (USDA) and is now regulated by the United States Environmental guard Agency (U.S. EPA) (Gervais, Luukinen, Buhl, & Stone, 2009). Just like any other pesticide beforehand Malathion could be registered it was tested for acute and chronic illness. The testing was conducted on animals who received an ample amount of doses that caused toxic effects to determine the type of affects it could possible have on humans. Based on studies submitted to the U.S. EPA in support of the registration of Malathion, U.S. EPA classifies Malathion as non-irritating to the skin of rabbits (Category IV) and minimally irritating to the eyes of rabbits (Category III) (Syracuse Environmental Research Associates, Inc., 2008).
