The Rathfriland conspiracy began on the 1st of November 1819 also known as All Saints Day. Men were returning home form the cairnbawn races in Newry, after a day out at the races. As they went along the route home, many people engaged in conversations, others turned off roads to reach their destinations, many fatigue from their long tedious journey causing them to have breaks and rests. hence it was difficult to say how many people would have make the long journey home.
Samuel Duncan, a local shoemaker from Rathfriland, tin Hollingsworth and William Beatty were all returning home, and as they passed the old schoolhouse in Barnmeen, a number of men followed them form Doyles public house. These men carried staves excluding Felix McConville, a blacksmith who carried a potash pestle which was inform to have been taken from Doyles. Hugh Kearney approached Duncan and the man with the pestle struck him on the head. Duncan fell and the accused men who had already struck him with the staves through with(p) so again as he lay on the ground.
Duncan then was carried into a neighbouring house, belonging to Colin McConville who escorted him home later to Rathfriland where he died that night.
Duncan, a well known character, renowned for his hatred and superstition against Catholics was frequently involved in and instigated rows and brawls.
