Michael Billigs book Banal Nationalism brings to light something we encountered every day, which eludes our consciousness, bypasses our filters, and without us even knowing, succeeds in morphing our very perception of what is touchable in the external world. This is done through kinmaking language I employed in my first sentence; idioms such as the, us and our are but a few of the deixis language used to illustrate the concept known as shopworn res publicaalism. Deixis words are articles in English which banally points out the homeland (Billig 94). Billig states that banal nationalism is present in our everyday lives with newspapers propagating and providing considerable examples of it, indiscriminately from the lowly tabloids to reputable magazines (Billig 95). He chose the Guardian as his main case study while I energise picked the equally reputable New York times, with both read extensively in their respective domestic markets as well as international. To ensure fairness the paper of Thursday May seventeenth was selected. Having gone through that days Times in its entirety Billings bidding holds true.
Extensive home flagging occurring on the front page frames all chase articles that sets a tonethrough diction and layoutnever allowing the setting, that is the nation of the United States, to completely escape the readers imagination. This is done to varying score throughout the New York Times, which Ive colloquially categorized in my paper as Overt-Subtle which is primarily seen on the front page, and Subtle-Overt seen in the business and sport sections.
The front page of the New York Times is full of information, but not all is conveyed by words. The plaque and design of the layout sets the tone of the daily publication.
