The conflict presented in this story is valets unfitness to obtain true happiness and essence despite the fact that he is living within a society that is shown to be perfect. Ned Merrill, the protagonist, swims across the county and it is displayed that in time though Ned seems to pay off a great life with a good wife and children, he remains truly alone. This loneliness displayed by Ned signifies that suburbia, despite seemingly containing human beingsy great qualities, is essentially an isolated dodging of living that fails to enable purposeful connection between people. In John Cheevers story there were a fewer key character relationships that displayed the imaginary façade of suburban relationships and the inability of people in suburban society to create meaningful relationships with each other. In suburban society, it is generally believed that the family which includes the husband, wife, and children ar quick and are there for each other and that neighbors are considered mop up friends.

After a few encounters with friends, it is discovered that something has happened to Ned in this regard. Was he losing his memory, had his gift for concealing painful facts let him for father that he had sold his house, that his children were in trouble, and that his friend has been ill (Cheever 253).
