Carver's unquenchable thirst for pedagogy eventually led him to Iowa, where he became the first African American to enroll at Iowa rural area College of Agriculture and Mechanic arts (Zanish-Belcher, 2000).

Though Carver demonstrated talent in art and music, his art instructor encouraged him to develop his abundance of horticultural talents. Carver's significant research and agricultural inventions are not his only accomplishments. He also was a respected instructor, actor and painter. He helped create the concept of distant learning by creating "movable schools" that brought useful knowledge to farmers by extending Iowa State reading to rural areas (Zanish-Belcher, 2000, 2).
